St. Patrick Cathedral

Street Outreach Ministry

We meet on Monday evenings  •  5 p.m. -7 p.m.

In the Annex Building at 249 13th St.

“What does love look like? It has the hands to help others. It has the feet to hasten to the poor and needy. It has eyes to see misery and want. It has the ears to hear the sighs and sorrows of men. That is what love looks like.”   – St. Augustine of Hippo

The “Christ Before Us” Ministry is a collaboration between Saint Patrick Cathedral and Catholic Charities of Fort Worth. The Cathedral is providing a great space and serving amenities (our Annex building) for the “SOS” (Street Outreach Services) program of Catholic Charities to meet with clients in need for immediate and long term resources. “SOS” works with those clients who are living in places not meant for human habitation: in tents, under bridges, cars, and on the streets. To volunteer in the Saint Patrick Cathedral “Christ Before Us” Ministry is choosing to welcome these needy on Monday nights for a few hours while they visit and/or wait their turn to consult with the SOS Team. Parishioners may also choose to participate in our last Sunday of the month barrel collection in the rear of the Cathedral, a donation of snack pack and hygiene kit items for our Monday night Outreach.

What does it mean to be a St. Patrick Cathedral Volunteer and to “welcome” these needy coming to this Outreach?

St. Patrick volunteers greet the clients as they enter the building with a cheerful smile, truly happy to see them and serve their needs. One of the parishioner donated snack packs and any hygiene items requested are offered to our guests. We have a sign-in book for the evening’s Outreach and a sign-in book for meeting with SOS that evening.

More St. Patrick volunteers then greet the clients at the “Snack Table” where all our volunteers have so generously come together to provide an array of healthy snacks and cold water bottles, coffee, and tea while they are visiting and waiting. The guests sense of dignity in being treated to a buffet caringly arranged by our volunteers is overwhelming to behold.

The clients then make their way into the main seating area to visit and eat as SOS begins consultations. All our volunteers are most welcome to sit and visit with clients. A compassionate ear is a comfort to most guests. A kind word and encouragement is an avenue of Grace.

Our “Knights of Columbus” Volunteers bring a great sense of well-being to us all.

St. Patrick’s Volunteers are requested to follow thru with Catholic Charities Volunteer Application Procedures which we will help you with.

What does it mean to donate to the Barrel Collection if I choose?

The last Sunday of each month you will find barrels in the back of the Cathedral. We have a list of items that we collect to make snack packs and hygiene kits from. Some parishioners choose to bring many of one item or several of a few items or just a couple of items. We are so thankful for all the donations.

These items are sorted into snack packs and hygiene kits for the clients as they enter the Outreach each Monday night. This provides the client a source of relief and sustenance in a very loving gift from our parishioners.

We will try to post an update each month of items we are overstocked in for that month.

Any “special request items” from our guests are referred to SOS and Catholic Charities.
