The Gospel of mark
Presented by Fr. John Robert
The Gospel of Mark is the earliest of the gospel accounts of the life, ministry, suffering, passion, death and resurrection of the Lord. In the early Church though, it was often viewed as a truncated version of the gospel of Matthew. Indeed, the focus of the gospel study and commentary by the Fathers was primarily on the texts of Matthew and John. It was not until the modern age and the development of the science of history that a renewed appreciation of the gospel of Mark occurred and it began to be understood as the first gospel chronologically. In fact, one could say that Mark developed the genre of the gospel. In light of the importance of the gospel of Mark, and the fact that the next liturgical cycle of readings (year B) will have as its gospel focus the text of Mark, Fr. John Robert will offer a series of classes on this beloved text. This is his first sustained presentation at St. Patrick's on a New Testament text which is his primary field of study.
